Do’s and Don’ts of Network Marketing: #2 - Don’t Get Lost In the Crowd
Let’s back up for a second. I'm going to assume that if you're reading this, you're tired of using the Stone Age methods I discussed in my first “Do’s and Don’ts” article on network marketing. I also guess that you’re eager to try an approach that will give you substantial income from marketing a business online which tells me you’ve chosen to use the Internet to promote your home business. You may even think you were given a "system" when you signed up with your current company because they gave you a corporate-style website to promote their products. Sorry, but that's not gonna do it.
Here’s why. Marketing a website on the Internet requires relevant content, and unique content. With most replicated websites, what you see on the webpage itself is not necessarily what’s found in the html code that gives the website its appearance. (See, I told you this was technical.) Here’s what you need to know: When you promote a website on the Internet, all search engines will rank your site in their system by “crawling” the text or “content” of the site. There are two things they want to see: lots of keywords that are relevant to the topic you are advertising, and new content or new formatting. This information must appear in the html code, not just as visuals on your website.
Since all search engines look at html code to get their information, you are faced with two problems. (Here’s the part your network marketing company doesn’t tell you.) First, your site might look nice, but try checking the html code by going to your computer’s top bar and clicking “View” in the drop down menu and then “Page Source.” Do you see any interesting content? Probably not.
Second, no matter what’s there, Google has already seen it before on someone else’s replicated business website, so it’s going to move on and look for a site that’s unique. To Google your website doesn’t exist. That’s why it’s wise to construct a website with html code to support your online sales efforts. You can go to Elance and hire someone to do it for you. Just make sure you give them a list of great keywords to embed in the code that will bring people to your site when they search for your products. Google will do the rest, but only if your html message is relevant. That’s called “optimizing” your site for the search engines, or SEO. Trust me, it will save you a lot of wasted effort and disappointment in the end, and you won’t get lost in the crowd!
